Designer: Amy Bartell, design director

When Bartell was hired to design this substantial backyard, there only existed a large swimming pool in the middle of the property with grass extending 3 feet back. Beyond that there was just dirt.

The pool was centered to the back door of the home, so Bartell used that orientation to organize the space.

“There’s a central axis starting at the back door that goes all the way to the end of the property,” she says. “It goes right to the middle of the pool. Then there are cross axis points on that as you go from the house out to the rest of the property.”
