The Fountainhead: What was once a steep backyard is now an intelligently designed entertaining space, the centerpiece of which is a 7-foot-tall bronze fountain that holds sentimental value to the homeowner. The waterfeature was with the owner at a previous property. When he moved into this spacious St. Louis dwelling, he took the fountain with him. “He really couldn’t find anything to do with it, so he wanted it to be an intricate part of the whole plan,” says project designer Brian Tabor of Prestige Pools in St. Louis. An elevated tanning ledge was built around the fountain, which spills into a catch basin. Stone columns produce sheet waterfalls feeding into the 14,500-gallon fiberglass pool. A saltwater system provides easy maintenance. A trip to Hawaii inspired the torches surrounding the stamped concrete patio — a nice complement to the fire bowls on each side of the pool.

Tiered triumph: Tiered landscaping opens up the patio space. “He wanted something really classy looking that could entertain a couple of hundred people at a time, so he needed a big patio area,” Tabor says. A grand staircase leads guests to the patio guarded by two angelic statues.
