The homeowners wanted an English-inspired garden, and Bartell distinguished each living area with different plants appropriate to the space.

Immediately out the back door is a small bluestone patio bordered with brick, which also is the home’s dominant material. Bartell decided to keep the area near the house fairly simple. “I wanted all the interesting little features farther away from the house to prompt you to go out there,” she says.

The first intersection in the main path diverts to an English-style Koi pond with a copper weir and bluestone Tudor rose ornament. It was placed under a large, existing ash tree to provide the fish with needed shade.

Japanese maples also were planted around the pond. “It’s trying to keep clean, geometric lines without having it feel too formal,” Bartell says.
