The fire outside

There was concern that a fire pit would be subject to heavy gusts at the edge of the cliff. To help maintain the flame, North and Del Re created a tall bench behind the fire feature, which also had the benefit of blocking views of the road below.

Del Re crafted the fire element himself, bending galvanized steel pipe and drilling holes large enough to produce enough flame, without allowing all the gas to escape out of the first one or two holes. Three sheet waterfalls make for an eye-catching combination of elements.

The fire feature and bench wall are veneered with the same blend of 1-by-1-inch travertine tiles used outside the spa. A two-tile-wide strip of the mosaic makes a clean accent between the coping and deck, both done in larger travertine pieces.
